LED & Outdoor Media Advisory · Malaysia

Screens and billboards are sold by people who profit from what you pick. We sit on the other side.

Every LED supplier will tell you their panels last. Every media owner will tell you their board is prime location. Both might be right — but neither is paid to tell you when they’re not, and this is the one purchase category where a mistake stays bolted to your wall, glowing, for everyone to see.

What we keep seeing

The problems we keep seeing in Malaysia

Impact Crux advises Malaysian retailers on both sides of this decision: owning screens (in-store LED, storefront displays, video walls) and renting reach (billboards and outdoor media placements). We don’t manufacture, sell or own any of it.

The cheap panel that dies young

Quality LED runs for years; budget-tier modules in this market keep failing far earlier, converting the purchase saving into replacement parts, billed technician visits and a shopfront that advertises neglect at full brightness. The panel grade you can’t see in the showroom is exactly where the low quote found its discount.

The wrong pixel pitch

Billboard-grade panels sold for close-up viewing because they’re the cheapest pitch available. The screen works perfectly and looks wrong from day one, showing customers a mosaic of dots instead of your brand. If a supplier quotes without asking how far away people will stand, you’ve received a number, not a solution.

The missing year two

No SLA, no local spare stock, no preventive maintenance plan. A screen is a multi-year asset, and a quote with no answer for year two isn’t cheaper. It just ends earlier.

The fleet gamble

Twenty outlets signed off a showroom demo, then one batch defect appearing in every location at once — with brand colours drifting between stores because nobody specified calibration.

The board that serves the media owner

On the rental side, the incentive problem is structural: a media owner’s KPI is occupancy, so every empty board is “high traffic, prime location” in the sales deck. Your KPI is footfall from your actual catchment. We’ve written about how to buy outdoor media without getting sold.

Our approach

What LED and media advisory with Impact Crux looks like

1

For owned screens, we start with your sites and your viewers — not a product catalogue

Viewing distances, ambient light, service access, content operations, and what the screens need to do across a fleet, not just in one flagship. That becomes the specification every supplier quotes against, instead of each supplier quoting whatever suits their stock.

2

We pressure-test the quotes, then connect you with vetted partners

On panel grade, SLA terms, calibration and CMS — then introduce suppliers and installers whose regional chain-store work we’d stake our name on. Current market context, including realistic installed pricing for Malaysia, is part of the conversation from the start, so you’re never comparing against nothing.

3

For outdoor media, we sit on your side of the negotiation

Matching placements to your store catchments, questioning the traffic claims, and structuring the buy around your footfall rather than the owner’s occupancy.

What this costs you: nothing. Advisory conversations are free. We earn a partnership fee only when a genuine match proceeds, and no partner pays to be recommended over another — how that works, in plain language.

Five questions before you sign any LED quote

What’s the designed viewing distance, and which pixel pitch does that require?Make them show the calculation.
Which factory tier does this panel come from, and can you prove it?
What exactly does the warranty and SLA cover — replacement lead time, local spares, who does the work?
Show me a Malaysian installation older than two years, still running.
What CMS runs the content, and what does it cost per screen per month?

A supplier who answers all five crisply is worth paying more for. One who gets defensive just saved you from a very expensive mistake.

Common questions

LED & outdoor media FAQ

How much should I budget for a retail LED wall in Malaysia? +
As a gauge, a 3m × 2m indoor wall professionally installed runs roughly RM60,000–70,000 including the CMS player and first-year service, with maintenance around RM6,000 a year after that. Site conditions, pixel pitch and access move the number — which is exactly why quotes need comparing against a specification, not against each other.
What pixel pitch does my store need? +
It follows viewing distance: roughly, minimum comfortable distance in metres equals the pixel pitch in millimetres. Close-range retail typically needs fine pitch; billboard-grade pitches belong outdoors. Paying for finer pitch than your viewers can perceive wastes money, and coarser than needed shows dots — the right answer is matched, not cheapest or finest.
Should I buy screens or rent billboard space? +
Different jobs. Owned screens work your own storefront and interior every day; rented boards buy reach in a catchment. Many retailers need one, some need both, and the split depends on store locations, budget and what you’re promoting. That’s a planning question before it’s a purchasing one.
Do you supply or install LED screens? +
No. Impact Crux is vendor-neutral: we don’t manufacture, supply or install. We define the specification, pressure-test quotes, and connect you with vetted suppliers and installation partners, staying involved after the introduction.
What should an installer’s credentials look like? +
Ask for Malaysian installations older than two years you can see, evidence of multi-outlet or regional chain work (often shareable only privately under NDA — itself a good sign), local technicians, and spare-module stock in-country.
