Partner Vetting Standards · Malaysia

No solution is perfect. My standards aren’t about the product.

After years in this industry, here’s what I’ve learned: most systems in the Malaysian market have genuine strengths, and none of them are 100% right for everyone. Feature lists don’t separate good partners from bad ones. Behaviour does — especially behaviour after the contract is signed, when the demo team has moved on and your Saturday-afternoon breakdown is nobody’s KPI.

So my vetting bar is about conduct, not brochures.

The bar

What a partner must demonstrate before I’ll put my name near them

They listen before they pitch

In front of me, and in front of clients: do they ask about operations, channels and process before naming a product? A vendor who opens with their solution has already failed the first test my clients’ problems will set them.

After-sales support that actually exists

Named delivery people, not just a confident salesperson. Written support terms, not “best effort.” Live Malaysian retail clients I can verify — including installations old enough to show how things look in year two and three.

Response timeliness

When something breaks, how fast do they answer, and who shows up? I check this the unglamorous way: by watching how they respond when there’s nothing to sell.

They accept being pressure-tested

Every partner knows I ask the same uncomfortable questions I publish for my readers — the five questions in every buying guide on this blog are the same ones their proposals face. A partner who gets defensive under those questions doesn’t stay a partner.

Non-negotiable

The rules that keep the advice independent

1
No partner pays to be recommended over another

I earn the same way from every genuine match, so steering has no payoff.

2
No exclusivity

No partner can demand to be my only answer in their category.

3
I’m free to recommend nothing

And I use that freedom constantly.

Roughly 7 in 10

of my advisory conversations end with no purchase recommendation at all — because most of the time the real problem is process or mindset, not the system.

Full disclosure

Where I have depth, and where I don’t — in the open

Where recommendations genuinely compete

In core retail systems — POS, ERP and related — I currently work with more than four vetted partners, so recommendations compete on fit.

Where the bench is thin

In LED supply and installation I currently have one vetted partner. In AI-driven e-commerce content there is, as far as I’ve found, only one offering of its kind in this market.

Where my network holds a single option, I’ll tell you that plainly — and if it doesn’t fit your situation, I’ll say so and help you look beyond it, unpaid. That has happened before and it will happen again. It’s the price of the model, and it’s cheaper than my name.

For vendors

Think your product clears this bar?

I take those conversations, and I mean it when I say I want to find the good ones — my clients are better served the deeper the vetted bench gets, especially in categories where it’s thin.

Know what you’re walking into: you’ll be pressure-tested the same way my clients’ quotes are. I’ll want to speak to your live Malaysian retail clients, see your oldest installations, read your support terms, and watch how fast you reply when there’s no deal on the table. Passing gets you evaluated for fit, case by case — never recommended by default, and never ahead of another partner because of anything you pay.

WhatsApp Ivan — 011-8888 1287 Vendors: tell me what you do and which retail problem you solve. You’ll get a straight answer either way.

Every name below cleared the conduct bar above. Vetted means eligible for consideration — never recommended by default.
